In the construction of road markings, too many glass beads scattered on the surface can easily form “virtual beads”. In this case, the glass beads cannot adhere well to the markings and can easily fall off the surface of the markings. Before this layer of “virtual beads” falls off, the reflective brightness of the markings is extremely poor at night, and the construction of the marking paint will show a phenomenon of overall or partial darkening.
1、 Embedding level of glass beads
The research results abroad show that when the glass bead is embedded in the marking line at 55% to 67% of the spherical diameter of the glass microbead, the light can almost produce complete retroreflection.
When dealing with a large number of glass beads, if the embedding level of the glass beads is below 50%, the resulting retroreflection is extremely poor, and the light almost completely penetrates the glass beads and undergoes refraction; When the embedding level of glass beads is around 60%, the result of retroreflection is optimal; As the embedding level increases, the consequences of retroreflection gradually decrease, because the number of light rays entering the glass bead also decreases with the increase of the embedding level of the glass bead. In actual construction, the distribution of glass beads is rarely diverse, but from a statistical perspective, the optical behavior of numerous glass beads is extremely similar to that of a single glass bead under the above conditions.
2、 What are the sizes of glass beads
In the application of marking, glass beads with larger particle sizes are more likely to fall off the marking surface than glass beads with smaller particle sizes. This is because glass beads with larger particle sizes have a greater torque when subjected to force on weekdays. However, the application of glass beads with larger particle sizes can significantly improve the visibility of markings at night. In fact, the improvement of the effect of large particle glass beads on retro reflection is mainly reflected in rainy nights or wet road conditions. Generally speaking, larger particle glass beads are more effective in reflecting light than smaller particle glass beads in wet and rainy nights.
3、 Interface state of glass bead coating film
The interface state and properties of the glass bead coating also affect the consequences of retroreflection.
After the coating film is formed, the density is high and the coating itself is more delicate. In this case, the interface between the glass bead and the coating film is relatively smooth, and the concave lens near the ideal lens has a focusing effect on the light. The light entering the glass bead almost returns to the driver’s eye along the original direction.
The coating itself is relatively coarse and coarse, and the coating is not very dense after film formation. There are many bubbles or larger particles of other fillers mixed in the coating film. The glass bead coating interface is rough, and a part of the glass bead air interface is mixed in. The glass bead coating interface becomes smaller. In this case, light not only produces significant scattering phenomena, but also causes some light to pass through the glass bead air interface and escape. Whether it is scattering or light passing through the glass bead air interface, it will cause partial light loss and low reflection. The conventional hot-melt route marking coating has a reflective brightness that does not overlap with MMA two-component route marking coating, which is the reason for this.
