What are the two commonly used product characteristics and their differences for road marking paint?

28 8 月, 2023

In our daily lives, the main commonly used road marking coatings are cold applied marking paint and hot melt marking paint. There are specific differences in application and construction, and sometimes we don’t know how to choose. Below, we will introduce the characteristics of these two products and their differences? For your reference in product selection.

There are two common types of road marking coatings for comparison: cold spray road marking coatings and hot melt road marking coatings. The differences between the two are as follows:

1. Product form
Cold spray markings are packaged in liquid paint (water-based and oil-based) drums; The hot melt marking is in powder form and packaged in woven bags.

2. Product Type
The hot melt pavement marking coatings are divided into hot melt pavement marking coatings, hot melt protruding pavement marking coatings, and color anti slip pavement marking coatings.

Cold spray type marking coatings are divided into single or dual component cold spray type marking coatings, scratch type marking coatings, structural type marking coatings, color anti slip pavement marking coatings, water-based pavement marking coatings, fluorescent marking coatings, and all-weather reflective marking coatings.

3. Construction comparison

The hot melt marking coating is in solid powder form at room temperature. During construction, the coating needs to be put into a melting kettle, with the temperature controlled between 180 ℃ and 210 ℃. The melting kettle is stirred at the edge, and after melting into a molten flow state, it is placed in the insulation melting hopper of the marking car.

Then, the solvent paint is introduced into the marking bucket and the material is kept in a molten state for insulation. Before marking, use a pre marking machine to apply primer at the indicated application position on the design drawing. Only after the current coating is completely dry can the standard coating be applied.

Cold spray marking paint can be directly applied for marking without heating. The marking paint can be diluted with thinner and drawn with a brush, roller, or cold spray marking machine. The color is clear and the process is relatively simple.

4. Product usage

The thickness of the cold spray marking paint film is between 0.3mm-0.9mm, and the general construction thickness is about 0.5mm. Cold spray construction only requires 0.25 kilograms of material per square meter.

The thickness of the hot melt standard paint film is 0.9mm-3.3mm, and the general construction thickness is about 1.5-1.8mm. The hot melt standard paint requires 4-5 kilograms per square meter.

5. Service life

The shelf life of cold spray marking paint is set to 1 year according to relevant national standards, while the shelf life of hot spray marking paint is set to 2 years according to relevant national standards.

6. Refurbishment processing

The thickness of the cold spray marking is relatively small, and it can be coated by covering or removing the original marking before coating. But if the hot melt marking is covered again, it will not look good, so in many construction sites, it is necessary to use a grinder to remove the old line before reapplying the new hot melt marking.

7. Construction safety

Hot melt marking construction can generate open flames to heat the coating, which can easily pose safety hazards. And some ground and parking lots cannot withstand high temperatures, and the hot melt marking machine is also inconvenient for construction. Cold spray marking paint is safer compared to room temperature construction. In addition, water-based road marking coatings using water as a diluent have low odor, environmental friendliness, non flammability, non explosion, high safety, and meet engineering environmental requirements, reducing the impact on the health and life of construction personnel and users. They are a new type of environmentally friendly marking coating.
